Three pensioners from Weiden in the Upper Palatinate, aged 60, 66 and 70, have created an electronically controlled roulette ball. This was supposed to give them advantages at the roulette table in the casino. But before the ball was used, the attempted fraud was discovered, the Bayerischer Rundfunk reported on Friday. The three pensioners and the 32-year-old son of the oldest of the trio had planned to scam several hundred thousand euros in the casino. For this purpose, they had developed a particular roulette ball with a diameter of 21 mm and an integrated battery-operated vibration motor.
In this way, the ball was to be remote-controlled and land in the desired pocket in the roulette wheel during the game rounds. However, it is unknown which casino the manipulated ball was to be used.
This is not the first attempt to defraud a casino with a manipulated roulette ball. In 2003, a fraudster replaced the roulette ball in the Casinos Austria Group’s Casino Velden with a magnetic ball. According to media reports, the damage amounted to 300,000 euros.
In 2005, a man allegedly used a pressure bottle that could generate 8 bar of pressure. With the bottle he had hidden under his jacket, he had managed to steer the bullet in the boiler. The air pressure device was powered by a battery he had carried in a small man’s handbag.
Messenger gangster group uncovers the plans
Even before the manipulated bullet was used, the perpetrators were caught. According to BR24, they had communicated in a messenger group for gangsters, which had been decoded by the authorities beforehand.
Thus, the supposed big coup of the trio of pensioners, who already had a criminal record, had ended before the judge.
The Criminal Investigation Department and two Weiden prosecutors had tried out the bullet with the manager of the gambling house and the head of security in the Bad Wiessee casino as part of their investigations, with surprising results. Despite all the security precautions, the ball has worked.
