Drills for masonry work can drill holes not only in concrete, but also in wood and aluminum. This is a versatile tool that lies somewhere between a drill and a jackhammer. With its chisel function, it is an ideal power tool for demolition of walls, drilling of floors, and removal of tiles.
Hole punch: What is it for?
Description of the hammer drill
To the naked eye, the perforator looks like a drill. The drill turns itself on and unscrews and drills into various supports of wood, plastic, or metal. Therefore, it is suitable for classic and high speed drilling work. This particular percussion system provides the force needed to drill large diameter holes (greater than 20 mm). For example, it’s very useful for passing cables and pipes through your site.
- Discover all perforators
- Hammer drill operation
Similar to a hammer drill, rotating a hammer drill bit will extract debris, and the front and rear hammer drills will crush the concrete and dig deeper into the material.
The drill is very powerful. Thanks to its strike, it is possible to drill holes in very hard materials (concrete, stone, granite, reinforced concrete, and hard stone) depending on the model selected.
- Rotary percussion: For perforations.
- Non-rotating perforations: For chisel (demolition, tiling or pavement removal).
- How a hammer drill works
- Depending on the model you choose, you will be able to use several features.
- You are free to use different modes to get the job done in the best possible way.
Easy rotation: You can use the chisel like a drill.
Drill Mode with Rotation + Concrete Drill: Drill to any type of material. This feature is arguably the main feature of the device.
Chipping mode: For dismantling work.
Impact drill or hammer drill?
Hammer drills are faster and quieter than hammer drills. Less effort is spent punching out the material. However, rotary hammer drills are heavier and bulkier than hammer drills. And the hole puncher punches holes that are coarser than the drill.
What are the different drill models?
Electromechanical drill
It works by drilling holes in wood, brick and metal using a mechanical device with springs and blades. It is easy to handle and is often used to perform common masonry tasks.
- Power: 1-10 joules.
- Electro pneumatic drill
This is a very powerful mechanism using compressed air and a piston system. Ideal for heavy work such as drilling holes in very hard surfaces (granite, reinforced concrete) and demolition of walls and dividers suitable for more professional or intensive use in more difficult or meticulous tasks such as creating trenches (electric cables, sewers).
- Power: Up to 30 joules.
- Cordless drill or corded drill
Cordless drill: ideal for working without looking for an outlet. Still, you need to charge the battery before you work and monitor its autonomy before charging. Also, the output of the cordless drill is limited to 3 joules.
Corded drill: Unlimited autonomy makes it more powerful. For large construction sites, don’t forget to take the extension cord ideal for drilling holes in very hard materials and for intensive use.
Which criteria for choosing your perforator?
Power (joule)
This is the “battering force” of the punch the higher the power, the higher the punching ability. For occasional use, 1.5 to 3 joules of power is ideal. Drills with a power of 5-8 Jules are reserved for intensive or professional use.
-
- Rhythm or frequency of heartbeat (strokes per minute)
- Chisel mode improves the performance of high impact hammer drills.
Rotation speed (number of revolutions per minute). This is the speed at which the drill penetrates or impacts the material. Due to the large diameter and deep drilling (300 rpm to 1,000 rpm), it is lower than the drill.
Chisel function
Some punchers are also chippers. The chisel function can be used for small demolition work (tiles, slabs, etc.).
Ergonomics and weight
Choose a lightweight drill for greater mobility. So you can easily and comfortably tinker with it. Generally, hole punchers weigh 2 to 6 kg. Do not hesitate to operate the various models in the store.
Drum
For cordless drills, battery selection is important. Check the battery voltage and amperage. These two criteria determine the power and battery life of the tool. Ni-Cd (nickel cadmium) or Ni-MH (nickel hydrogen) batteries are old, heavy and take a long time to charge. Prefer Lithium Ion Batteries: More expensive, but lighter and faster charging.
Mandrel
The punch is equipped with a quick release chuck. The so-called “SDS” chuck has four grooves, two for reciprocating motion and two for rotating the device. Bits are not retained like traditional chucks to support percussion.
SDS + Chuck: The most common high performance model. Easy to attach to fleas, fleas and drill bits. Drill hole diameter: 30 mm.
SDS Max Chuck: Reserved for high performance, intensive or professional use drilling diameter: Maximum 52 mm…
What are the hole punch options and accessories?
- Indispensable accessories
- Concrete drill bit and wooden drill bit.
- Fleas and fleas (for fleas)
- Gaudi (to dig a curved groove)
Replaceable Chuck: To use a drill bit and a smooth shank bit, you need to change from an SDS chuck to an auto-tightening chuck.
Safety clutch
An integral part of the hole puncher, it can stop the machine as soon as the drill is blocked. This accessory extends the life of the drill and increases its safety.
Speed variator
It allows you to change gears by adapting it to the best use.
Integrated lighting
For drilling and fleas in hard to reach places for example under a bathtub in a bathroom without windows…
Depth gauge
By functioning as a guide for uniform drilling, you can perform drilling work accurately.
What kind of safety device do you need?
Hole punches produce debris and particle protrusions. Therefore, it is imperative to wear gloves, goggles, gas masks, protective shoes, earplugs and even personal protective equipment such as a helmet during dismantling work.
